We need to look both at the function of the skin, am and pm, and also how our skin’s requirements differ at these times of day, if at all.

During the day our skin deals with a multitude of damage, caused by free radicals from car pollution to UVA-UVB assault. We need to not only to hydrate the skin but super protect it from these elements - why? Because this is your insurance policy against premature ageing, lines, wrinkles and sun spots and also reduces your risk of skin cancer. Daily protection should be our main concern from morning till the sun goes down. 

Night time is when we both mentally and physically repair and recharge. This also goes for the skin. It is the time when the skins natural repair system come into play and to assist this we need to feed the skin with good nutrients.

So this is what our skin does and needs morning and night, but can we get all this from one product?

Many creams come with SPF and I would HIGHLY recommend using this during the day, whilst also looking out for a treatment with anti-oxidant benefits and good hydration.  At night our skin is looking for a drink of replenishing nutrients. At this time of repair I think the skin can also use more hydration and a richer treatment. 
You will see that I am an advocate of using a separate treatment morning and night for the express reason that the skin is covering two different functions; daytime protection against weather and pollution and night time for repairing the damage and nurturing the skin. Your night treatment need not be a cream form moisturiser but an oil or a serum so long as it does a suitable job of replenishing for your skin type. Using a day cream with an SPF* at night time may not cause any damage to your skin but it will not be as effective as a specialised night treatment in giving you the best skin possible.

As for the question of saving money – using one cream day and night is no more economical than buying two creams as they will last twice as long!

*Some day treatments with SPF do state they can be used at night, you should use an SPF summer and winter!
